Paintbrush Divide 2017

August 23, 2017
No ice axe needed.  Use the "summer trail" (near the western end of the divide). There is a small patch of snow remaining near the divide - use caution.  Trekking pole(s) recommended if you are carrying an overnight pack.

Small (approx. 20' long) patch of steep snow must still be crossed just below the east side of the divide.  Well worn hiker "trough" across this patch.  Hikers are encouraged to travel with trekking poles at a minimum or an ice axe depending on comfort level.

People heading for the divide from Paintbrush should use the winter or south bowl route. On the Cascade side the edges of the trail are beginning to melt out but travel requires traversing steep snow, very hard in the morning and crampons would make travel easier and safer. Ice axe and real mountaineering boots strongly recommended. Also snow mountaineering skills are necessary.
